What does it mean to file an extension?

What if you're not ready to file your tax returns by tax day? This can happen for many reasons - you may be ill, out of town, missing a form, or waiting for some other necessary information. In cases like this, you can always file an extension with the IRS.

Taxpayers can file for a 6-month extension if they need more time to prepare their income tax return. The IRS grants the extensions automatically as long as you complete the proper form on time. Filing the extension saves taxpayers from the penalty for not filing on time - as long as the tax return is filed by the extended due date.

Filing an extension does not extend the due date for paying the IRS or state. If a taxpayer owes taxes to either the IRS or state, the payment must be made by tax day to avoid the penalty for not paying on time. Interest will be calculated on assessed penalties and owed amounts, so don't delay in paying the IRS!
